Political games
For months now we have been waiting for something to come out of the ammedment to the Egyptian constitution. Never in all of Egypt's history, thousands of years, have Egyptians been able to choose the person that governs them. Even if this was just some facelifting measure by a very tired regime, it would have at least made this year's presidential elections more interesting, something to look forward to.
I really don't know what to think now. Political parties should, on paper at least, not have much difficulty nominating someone in the elections, but what i don't get is why there are no restrictions for this year's elections only, while after that parties will have to have a minimum percentage within the parliament before they can have candidates. Is there something "special" about this year's elections?
I also don't see how there can ever by any independent candidates in any presidential elections. The parliament is overwhelmingly dominated by the ruling party and i cannot forsee any change to that anytime soon, so how can an independent candidate secure 65 signatures from within the parliament? Out of the 454 seats, all but maybe 20 or 30 [not sure of the exact figure] are from the ruling party.
Anyway, they say the next elections will follow a proportional representation system, let's see how that goes.
No one doubts that President Mubarak will win the elections, i just want to see how he will win, how the game will be played.
There are signs of weakness in the ruling regime and i think the regime feels that too. There were no other players in the past, the regime keep running up and down [and round and round] to prevent anyone else from entering the ring, but now its getting too old and too slow to keep running like that and there are many others waiting for the chance to get it.
The question is, who will that be?
The main player is sick, is there a doctor in the house?
If there is, he had better come quickly.
